We are very proud to announce that our VISTAs Katherine Sawyer and Nate Dears will be completing their full year of national service at the end of July 2015.
Katherine has spent the last year serving as the Marketing and Communications Specialist for PediPlace located in Lewisville, TX. She will be leaving our project to work with at-risk youth in the Dallas ISD school system. We wish her the best! Fortunately for us, Nate has elected to continue serving a second year of service with Our Daily Bread as their Grants and Resource Development VISTA.
According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 1 in 4 women and 1 in 7 men will become victims of intimate partner violence at some point in their lives. On average, more than 3 women are murdered by their husbands or boyfriends every day. 20-25% of women in college reported experiencing an attempted or completed rape. Despite the high number of victims, only 2% of rapists will ever spend a day in prison. A major factor in the unimpeded continuation is that speaking out about domestic violence and sexual assault is considered uncomfortable and taboo.
Denton County Friends of the Family (DCFOF) believes that the first step in seeing a decrease in these crimes is to shine light on them in the public eye, and the best way to do that is by talking about them. The VISTA project at DCFOF created a Speaker’s Bureau, which is a group of volunteers committed to bringing attention to the issues of domestic violence and sexual assault, as well as the services that DCFOF offers to survivors and their families. VISTA member Kimberly Shields successfully recruited a Denton police officer as a speaker’s bureau volunteer. Through the recruitment of the police officer, the relationship between DCFOF and the Denton Police Department will be stronger and will further the cause of bringing an end to domestic violence and sexual assault.

Habitat for Humanity of Denton County is dedicated to eliminating poverty housing by providing families a hand up toward home ownership. VISTA member Salome Clarke worked diligently to recruit long-term volunteers to help with administrative tasks in the Habitat for Humanity office. On average, it takes 480 volunteers and 3,8000 volunteer hours to complete a Habitat home, resulting in a lot of data entry and filing. Salome successfully recruited 5 volunteers to assist the staff with these tasks and providing relief to Habitat for Humanity staff.

Hearts for Homes is a non-profit agency in Denton, TX which provides assistance to the aging population in the areas of housing repair and rehabilitation in order to keep older adults in their own homes for as long as possible. In June, the agency held its annual Testimonial Dinner at the Hilton Garden Inn of Lewisville. VISTA member Amaya Howard created an Eventbrite page to allow donors and attendees to donate and purchase tables for the event. Over 150 guests were in attendance and Hearts for Homes secured over $15,000 in donations that evening which surpassed last year’s totals.
