Our Daily Bread (ODB), a community soup kitchen located in Denton, Texas, provides an average of 300 meals per day along with health and human services to the hungry, homeless and economically disadvantaged. Serving those in need for over 17 years, ODB, strives to improve the health, well-being and economic self-sufficiency of its clients. The 2017 Denton County Homeless Coalition Point-in-Time Count identified the top three needs for those experiencing homelessness as transportation, clothing/food, and food stamps. Our Daily Bread meets these three areas by providing gas vouchers and public transportation passes to those who have interviews or medical appointments, by serving seven meals per week on site, no questions asked, as well as providing weekly meals to three other local agencies, and by hosting a Tarrant Area Food Bank Social Services Specialist to answer questions and complete applications for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). In 2017, ODB distributed nearly 204,000 hygiene items; 436 shower passes; 1200 laundry vouchers; 21,422 referrals to social agencies; 232 gas vouchers; 80 prescription vouchers; 4,085 Farmer’s Market items; 993 bus vouchers. All in addition to over 86,000 meals served. The Marketing and Fund Development VISTA will build capacity by researching and writing a minimum of 4 grant proposals with a potential outcome of $60,000 and enhance current fundraising and marketing efforts through the creation of a plan that will result in improved community outreach, awareness and support. The Marketing and Fund Development VISTA at Our Daily Bread will increase community awareness and enhance fundraising to provide more clients with nutritious meals and basic needs services. The VISTA will increase fundraising efforts through the research, writing and submission of a minimum of 4 grant proposals that persuasively communicate ODB’s mission and programs to potential funders and garner a potential outcome of $60,000. The VISTA will enhance fundraising efforts by developing a plan to increase donors and participation in fundraising events, will create and update collateral marketing materials and improve current social media communications to include the development of new social media avenues to communicate with targeted audiences. Applicants should possess good communication skills, be proficient with social media marketing and have basic computer skills.
Aleisha Tunstall is the Grant Research and Development VISTA at Our Daily Bread (ODB). ODB is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit community soup kitchen located in Denton, TX, that provides nutritious meals, special services and referrals for other services to those in need. Currently, Aleisha is working under the direction of the Executive Administrator to create a Volunteer Council for Our Daily Bread. Aleisha is outlining the roles of the Volunteer Council and its mission. The Volunteer Council is estimated to begin serving at ODB around September of 2017. The purpose of the Volunteer Council is to take the place of the Volunteer Coordinator position and take over volunteer communications, recognition, and database duties.
Aleisha Tunstall is the Grant Research and Development VISTA at Our Daily Bread (ODB). ODB is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit community soup kitchen located in Denton, TX, that provides nutritious meals, special services and referrals for other services to those in need. Currently, Aleisha is assisting the Executive Administrator to plan for ODB’s Volunteer Appreciation Event. Aleisha is assisting with organizing and developing event flyers, decoration themes, giveaway items, and scheduling. The event takes place on Thursday, April 27th from 5:30pm to 7:30pm. There will be music, an ice cream sundae bar, and a gift giveaway at the event. The purpose of the Volunteer Appreciation Event is to ensure that all Our Daily Bread volunteers receive a personalized and meaningful acknowledgement for their efforts.
VISTA member Cody Armstrong submitted a grant application to the Denton Benefit League for $13,225 to remodel client bathrooms at Our Daily Bread. The facilities have not been update since the creation of the church and have become quite dilapidated. If awarded, this grant will be provide Our Daily Bread’s clients better facilities while receiving services and facilitate a more positive interaction with the organization.
Our Daily Bread is a community soup kitchen that serves a free, nutritious lunch meal Monday through Friday to the hungry and homeless in Denton County, TX. In addition, the organization started serving Monday dinner meals and Saturday lunches. On Saturday, February 27, Our Daily Bread had it most important fundraising event of the year. The 3rd Annual A Heart for the Hungry event was held at the University of North Texas Gateway Center and featured a dinner, dance and a silent auction. It was a lovely event that was successful due to the teamwork of staff, board members, and volunteers. AmeriCorps VISTA, Nate Dears, helped managed the data, solicit donations, advertise the event on the agency’s website, and assisted with creating the program for the event. Our Daily Bread raised approximately $60,000, and will use the funds to continue helping those need in with the meals we provide and special services we offer.

As a VISTA Member at Our Daily Bread you will help end poverty by increasing out financial capacity to provide more clients with nutritious meals and basic needs services. Major functions include researching grant opportunities, writing a minimum of 4 grants with a potential outcome of $75,000, enhancing Our Daily Bread’s fundraisers to increase sponsorship and donations and assisting with the marketing of fundraisers and events. VISTAs serve their communities through indirect service. The programs developed by the Grant Research and Development VISTA will endure for years, however the VISTA member will have limited interaction with Our Daily Bread clients and will be based in an office setting. Applicants should possess strong verbal and written communication skills and be able to work independently. Applicants with grant writing knowledge and skills a plus.

Our Daily Bread (ODB), a community soup kitchen in Denton, TX that serve nutritious meals to those in need is off to an amazing start in 2016. With the assistance of VISTA Nate Dears, ODB applied for the Dallas Morning News grant which was awarded at the end of 2015. ODB received 3% of the total grant fund, which was broken into three checks ($10,800, $7,385.85, & $14,814.15). The total amount Our Daily Bread received is $33,000. Because of this grant, ODB will be able to better serve clients by offering urgent/emergency dental, prescription assistance, and fund a staff position. Nate is currently writing several other grants to continue supporting ODB’s mission.

Our Daily Bread (ODB), a community soup kitchen in Denton, TX that serve nutritious meals to those in need, is expanding on their mission.
ODB has partnered with the North Texas Food Bank (NTFB), Denton Community Food Center (DCFC), and Target Distribution Center to participate in the backpack program, Food 4 Kids. Food 4 Kids, is a program that distributes backpacks filled with food to elementary kids who are at risk of food insecurity and chronic hunger.
NTFB provides the food, and DCFC use their box van to pick the food up and drop it off at the distribution center. Volunteers pack the food into backpacks and ODB delivers the backpacks to elementary schools. VISTA member, Nate Dears, recently wrote a grant that was approved for $1,000. These funds will be used for fuel and maintenance of the box van. Currently, over 600 kids are receiving food through the Food 4 Kids program and the numbers are expected to grow.

VISTA Nate Dears has increased Our Daily Bread’s capacity to serve the homeless and hungry of Denton through his grant writing and fundraising skills. Since July 2014, Nate has helped raise $67,417 of which $16,709 came from the “Donate” button he installed on the agency’s website!
Nate has successfully written grants totaling $23,713 to provide MREs (meals ready to eat), fund a staff position and aid with emergency assistance to the 2,333 unduplicated clients of which 1,044 are homeless and 89 are children.

On November 9, 2015, Denton Benefit League (DBL) approved the Our Daily Bread grant proposal. Our Daily Bread will receive $ 5,531.80, to purchase 1,152 self-heating meals ready-to-eat (MRE). A MRE is a self-contained package that has the following: An entree, side dishes, cracker/bread, dessert, beverage, condiments, plastic wares, and self-heater.
Our Daily Bread distributes two MREs per client every Friday to those who are homeless, during the colder season. With this grant, Our Daily Bread will be able to feed at least 500 people.
