Sexual Assault Awareness Month is a very big deal on the University of North Texas campus in Denton and the University encourages students to attend multiple sexual assault awareness events. Denton County Friends of the Family Community Education VISTA Kim Shields is co-chairing the committee in charge of planning and marketing awareness events in April 2016. She attends monthly meetings, mapping out the details of the events and working with other committee members to ensure all necessary resources are available. Events include a resource fair where information about Sexual Assault Awareness Month is handed out to students and a Walk a Mile in Her Shoes awareness walk in which men put on heels and walk in protest of sexual violence. One evening will feature a Trivia Night where students can participate in groups to win prizes while answering “jeopardy” style questions about sexual assault and sexual violence while another evening will be dedicated to Take Back the Night and will include a resource fair, a speech about Sexual Assault Awareness Month and an awareness walk around campus. Finally, Denim Day a social media hashtag event in protest of a rape conviction in Europe a few years ago that was overturned because the victim was wearing jeans. These events will not only educate students but may also prevent incidents of sexual assault.
